AIRASIA SPONSORS RUNNING VESTS FOR BORNEO MARATHON

Kota Kinabalu, 23 Sept 2009 – AirAsia has come on board as sponsor for the Borneo International Marathon (BIM) 2009 running vests. Building on its success from last year’s involvement in the inaugural race, AirAsia is offering sponsorship again this year so that every runner receives in his race kit an AirAsia running vest with the slogan Jog on to AirAsia.com.

Andrew Voon and Simon Amos, Directors of Championship Sports Events, organisers of the Borneo International Marathon, were on hand to receive the running vests from Roger Porferio Soria, AirAsia Station Head for Kota Kinabalu.

“We are very honored and happy that AirAsia has given us such strong support not only with the running vests and 50 runners but also with lucky draw tickets for the runners. These kinds of positive corporate leadership initiatives are reflective of the dynamic organisation that is Air Asia. We look forward to continued support from AirAsia and to working together to develop Kota Kinabalu and other points in Sabah as major sports tourism destinations,” said Andrew Voon.

Azran Osman-Rani, AirAsia X CEO, said, “We are very excited about supporting the Borneo International Marathon again. It’s fantastic to be involved in an event that can bring people from all over the world to Kota Kinabalu, one of Malaysia’s best destinations. AirAsia will continue to promote marathon events held across its network of destinations as part of our commitment towards the development of sports and the promotion of active lifestyles.”

Fifty AirAsians from Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Thailand and Indonesia will be making up the airline’s team for BIM 2009, and it will be the airline’s biggest team participation in any sports event so far. The team runners will be running distances of from 10km to 21km to the brutal 42km full marathon. Azran will be embracing the challenge of running another full marathon with the hope of bettering his time after completing his first full marathon in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in July this year.

AirAsia’s running club, established last year, has grown from strength to strength. Twenty AirAsians participated in BIM 2008, and the team has since then participated in running events such as the Pacesetters 15km and Adidas King of the Road runs in KL. Pushing itself to the next level, the team recently participated in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in July with 20 runners.

AirAsia, the world’s best low-cost airline, currently flies direct to Kota Kinabalu from international destinations including Singapore, Shenzen, Jakarta, Macau, Brunei, and Clark (Manila) as well as from within Malaysia from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Labuan, Miri, Penang, Sandakan, Sibu and Tawau. In total, AirAsia has 113 routes and close to 60 destinations in ASEAN, China, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Through its low-cost long-haul affiliate AirAsia X, it also reaches northern China, Australia, UK and UAE.
